Hair styles and colors straight from the ramp may look cool, but dermatologists warn that too many chemicals and heat styling can damage hair. With time, hair subjected to such “torture” becomes brittle and lifeless, requiring complete rejuvenation and the best hair care.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that hair is alive. If it were, it could heal itself! The truth is, hair is a dead, elongated form of protein called keratin; but its roots are alive. That is why there is such fuss about gentle handling and caring for hair. According to dermatologists, it is high time women woke up to the fact that the very things they do to make hair beautiful and glossy, like dying, perming, straightening, and others, eventually snatch the health of hair and harm them.

When hair gets damaged, the layer of lipid or fat, forming a protective coating around cuticles and giving hair the shine, is removed. One of the common damages found on hair, is done by chemicals in hair products. They leave hair drier and rougher, stripping off all natural oils. To say it simply, chemicals kill hair.

Tips from hair experts
  • The more you keep hair naturally flowing, the better. Keeping them tied up always in braids or buns or subjecting them to excessive handling and styling, weakens them.
  • Wash your scalp thoroughly, but use a shampoo that contains mild cleansers and nourishing elements. Then, let shampoo move through the strands.
  • The basic purpose of a shampoo is to clean the scalp, as it may get bogged down with buildups, dirt, excess oil, and other impurities. This may choke hair follicles, disrupting the normal hair cycle.
  • Avoid rubbing strands vigorously while shampooing, as this may open cuticles. Simply run your fingers through them and let the lather and water run through.
  • Frequency of shampooing depends on your scalp type. If it is oily, wash every alternate day. If it is dry, twice or thrice a week is enough. The American Academy of Dermatology advises against daily shampooing.
  • For best results, apply conditioner a few inches away from the scalp. If your hair is oily, apply only to hair tips. Conditioners are not meant to be used on the scalp, but hair strands. Their job is to form a protective layer around cuticles to close them and smoothen hair texture for shine. They hardly have any use on the scalp, except form buildups.
  • You need to be specific in the use of shampoo and conditioner. Picking a random product won’t do. Read ingredients and choose products according to hair type. For example, for dry and frizzy hair, choose rich hair products that moisturize hair. For oily hair, choose light weight products. For thin or fine hair, choose voluminizing products.
  • Protect your hair from strong winds and the sun. Wear a hat or tie them up when you are out in harsh weather conditions.

Eat a healthy diet rich in protein and fresh foods. Hair is made up of protein, remember? Drink lots of water.

Never ignore any sudden change in hair and scalp health. Consult a trichologist. Keep in touch with a good stylist to get the best hair care tips for hair that appears full of life and shine.
